My journey started in a beautiful village in Himachel Pradesh, Jhikkar, where I lived until I was 6 months old. At this time, my parents migrated to Ghana, but we still visited Jhikkar every summer. In Ghana the culture felt so different–the language, the food, the music. When visiting India, people’s heads would turn at someone who looked Indian, but spoke with an accent that was completely unfamiliar.
My friends in Ghana were the first to encourage my artistic side, before I had even acknowledged this side of myself. Over the years I would see people making creative work, and it made me conscious that I might be suppressing a side of me—a side that didn’t get support at home, where technical education was prioritized. Indeed, in 2015, in line with my parents’ wishes, I left Ghana and obtained a Bachelors in Materials Science and Engineering( MATSE) at Pennsylvania State University
Living away from home and family, for the first time, was unlike anything I could have imagined and I was exposed to new cultures and sub-cultures. I discovered a new appreciation for materials, technology, and architecture—and became obsessed with exploring their intersection.
That search led me to Germany, where I pursued a Masters in Integrative Technologies and Architectural Design Research (ITECH) at the University Of Stuttgart. In this program I had the opportunity to study and work with an amazing group of interdisciplinary and multicultural students, all sharing the common goal of learning from researchers/experts on co-design principles. These principles center on moving beyond simply using a material for aesthetics, and focus on the creation of designs that are materially efficient, environmentally aware, and context-specific. The program made me appreciate and practice parametric design, digital fabrication, bottom-up/top-down design process, research and utilizing emerging technologies.
A passion for research, design and technology has fueled my creative side. And any opportunity to be creative feels deeply meaningful to me, especially when paired with technology. This is the path I choose to be on.
